Kepes Institute Entrance

Museum / Eger Hungary / 2012 / Completed, no longer extant

How to carry a counter on a thin steel plate.

The entrance to a museum devoted to the work of Gyorgy Kepes (1906-2001). Born in Hungary, Kepes was invited by Moholy-Nagy to teach at the New Bauhaus in Chicago, and later founded at MIT a place of research joining art and science. As a home for his work in his own country, the town of Eger has collected and shown it since the 1990s, and in 2012 a historic building in the town was converted to open as the museum.

Our starting point was the attitude of Kepes himself: the attempt to grasp light and the forms of nature mathematically. The welcome counter that greets visitors was generated as a structure carried on thin steel plate alone. A network of autonomously moving observation points (Super Eye) reads the space and lets the form grow out of it. The shape was not decided in advance and applied; it rose from the single condition of carrying a load – and when it was finished, it had come to look like the lattice of cancellous bone.
