Can 12,000 strings hang without casting shadows on one another?
Concept space design for LIMITLESS CO-EXISTENCE, the Lexus Design Event at Milan Design Week 2018, held in the Cavallerizze of the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci. The event was built on "CO-" — as in cooperation, collaboration and coexistence — and on the belief that design can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, and reveal to humanity that our possibilities are limitless.
In the main room a visually infinite number of hanging vertical strings stand for the world's individuals. Each string is illuminated by a single light source, and yet not one is in the shadows. Holding that condition meant calculating the position of every one of the twelve thousand strings, so that no string falls into the shadow of another. The theme of the exhibition became, directly, a problem in geometry to be solved.
Alongside it we showed a world map of the automobile: some thirty thousand car parts laid out across a circular surface like a single map. One car appears as a gathering of countless parts.
