Takeyama Dental Campus

Clinic / Sakai Osaka / 2018 / Completed

How to keep a glass waiting room open to the street, bright but out of the sun.

The best medicine is knowledge that keeps people from falling ill, delivered to the public. A dental clinic founded on that belief, sending knowledge out to the town from a fully glazed waiting room. The canopy was shaped to cut direct sun while keeping the room bright with reflected light.

SPACE

COMPUTATION

How long each point on the glass takes direct sun. The sun is stepped every ten minutes through a full year from the summer solstice.
The same calculation, sent forward one day at a time. As the seasons turn, the face that takes the sun and the hours it takes change places.
Where the light bounced off the canopy reaches the ceiling, and how much of it arrives. The section of the canopy was decided from this distribution.
